We have an incredible anthology of sacred texts we call the Bible, or Scripture, that give us the story of our ancient roots. One of the challenges of continuing our connection to distant times, places, and cultures is that without getting a sense of the context in which they were written, they can seem weird, unrelated to our lives, or even downright offensive to us today.

That is why Preaching is necessary to the first half of our Sunday service, called the Liturgy of the Word.  The clergy give context to the scriptures. They offer an interpretation of how to apply the wisdom (or cautionary tales) of Scripture to our lives today. Even if the interpretation isn’t one you agree with, the gift of a sermon is that it gets us to think about scripture, not that we necessarily agree on it.
